Washington PCT 2015: Day 4

A view of hood while climbing
Cool view while climbing
Day 4 began with another new acquaintance. We met Dr. Bob, a composer who writes minimalist music based on nature. He had done a string quartet based on his hike of the Appalachian trail and had secured a grant to do the same with the Pacific Crest Trail. As we breakfasted on the bank of Panther creek, he joined us. We talked music for a while and then started our up out of the valley.

Trail to the top of the mountain!
Mount Adams
Mount Hood
The climb was an unrelenting 3,000+  feet over the course of a couple miles. It was our first climb of that size and we took a few rests on the way up. There were a couple nice views on the way, then there was a short steeper trail to the top of big huckleberry mountain. From there, we could see all Hood, Adams, and Rainier. If you ever hike through there, it is worth the short trip to look around! On top of the mountain, we found we had a signal and learned that gay marriage had been ruled constitutional, so that was a big deal!

That's where we are headed!
Besides the view from the top of the mountain, there was really nothing but forests all day. They held in the moisture and it got muggy. We ran into more people on their way down to Panther creek. They were excited to go swimming while we would have to wait till the next day.

Hiking through lots of woods

You can't see well but that is lava below the trees
In the end, we hiked about 12 miles on our 4th day. We camped in a quiet campsite next to a volcanic rock flow. There were no birds and it felt very quiet, giving us the impression we were being stalked by a mountain lion. So we named the site "mountain lion" campsite.
